What is the waiting period for a surf contest?

A waiting period for a surf contest is the time that they have to run the contest. For example the waiting period is 2 weeks, but the contest only takes a maximum of 4 days to run if they ran the contest as fast as they could. The reason for the waiting period is so the contest can be run in the best surf possible. The theory is that hopefully within the 2 week period their will be some sort of swell. Some contests have larger or smaller waiting periods that 2 weeks. Cause the truth is no one wants to surf waves in a contest like the ones below.
