What happens when arguably the biggest surf contest of the year, The US Open of Surfing, loses its 2 major sponsors? Its a question many in the surf industry are asking as news came out today that Hurley and Nike will no longer be sponsoring The US Open of Surfing.
Known for being both a surf contest and lifestyle event the US Open of Surfing clearly pulls in 100,000's of spectators over the summer who provide revenue of both merchandise sales and for the city of Huntington Beach. To many this loss of sponsorship comes as a surprise as this contest has continually grown over the past few years and is a highlight of many people's summer.
The only question that remains is will there be a 2013 US Open of Surfing? Is there a brand or company who can fill a void of such a big sponsorship both financially and structurally. Its a question that will only be answered as the days and weeks move on.
