Displacement Hulls have made a come back here in Southern California especially in San Diego. They are a unique design which differs from a standard shortboard by sitting lower in the water when being ridden.
Instead of planning over the water, it pushes through the water require a patient and smooth style to correctly ride one of these boards. Turning the board is done on rail rather than with your back foot. Displacement Hulls are very groovy and something you should try to get your hands on if possible.
