Many are beginning to question the ASP World Tour and whether it really is the "Dream Tour" I mean in some ways it is. For example, the accommodations for the pro surfers and the amount of prize money at each event has increased substantially.
But with tour stops in New York and San Francisco this past year, it often has the appearance that we have strayed away from holding contests in the best and most consistent surf spots in the world. With rumors foating around of different "alternative" tours with big prize purses and some of the best waves around it will be exciting to see how the ASP responds.
The reality is that I am not against the ASP World Tour in any way. I think it has been the driving force behind our sport and its great that pro surfers can make a good living through winning contests and endorsement deals.
Moreover, I think we are at a defining moment for professional surfing and that as the ASP continues to advance and improve the world tour, we will see surfing begin to gain coverage in the mainstream media whether we have contests in New York or Tavarua.
