Go Pro Cameras have been around for awhile now and for good reason.

Their Surf Specific camera boasts 5 Megapixels. Not comparable to a DSLR, but for the price it can't be beat. The camera housing is submergible to depth of 180 feet which means it can handle the heaviest surfing conditions. At $269.99 the price is very modest to get into underwater photography.
The Surf Hero comes with a adhesive board mount which allows you to video yourself while surfing. The mount is heavy duty and Go Pro has done a great job testing it in heavy surf from Tahiti to the North Shore of Hawaii. Various mounts can also be purchased such as a wrist strap and helmet mount to expand your options when shooting.
The battery last for 2.5 hours after a full charge - plenty to capture your whole surf session without worry. Various settings on the camera will allow you to catch all the action from your session. Photos can be taken every 2/5/10/30/60 seconds. Other options include video, self timer, single shot or triple shot. I suggest playing around with all the different shooting modes and see which works best for you.
