USA Surfing Championships 2010 - Lowers

Take the Best 18 and under Surfers and put them in a competitive contest,  surfing one of the best waves around and what do you get?

The USA Surf Championships at Trestles in Orange County, CA.

The biggest event of the year - the finale of finales. Some of the most innovative and progressive surfers hit the water to get their chance at a Title.

With surfers like Kolohe Andino and Evan Geiselman competing things were guaranteed to be competitive. Nothing summed this up better than the 18u Mens final on Monday afternoon when Kolohe and Evan exchanged waves pulling their best tricks and maneuvers.

The weather was cold, the wind was blowing, but the surfers were still able to pull together some great rides.

Choosing Board Shorts

There are alot of factors that can help you choose the right pair of board shorts. The biggest being how much money you want to spend. Hurley has a pair for $200. While around $55 will get you a decent pair.

The biggest difference between a $200 pair and a $50 pair is the materials used and the stretch in the materials. Another thing you must consider is the style of trunks you want. Do you want a short retro cut or longer trunks which cater to longboards.

Also you must decide whether you want a plain or crazy design on your trunks. Your best bet when looking for a pair of board shorts is to head down to your local surf shop.

Put your Spare Change to use

Alot of times you will get spare change throughout out the day from various purchases.

Most of the time you throw it in your car or pants pocket and never see it again. One thing I do is keep a small bag in my car.

Whenever I get change I put it in this bag. Then when I go surfing I have money for parking and  food afterward.

Hamboards - Huntington Beach

Unusually Long, Fast, Loose and Fun are all words that could be used to describe Hamboards. Founded in Huntington Beach out of their garage, Hamboards has grown to include 3 different models along with a small collection of accessories.

What started as an idea in 1995 has turned into a full blown business in 2010. What makes Hamboards unique is that their main model is 6'8; the Size of a regular surfboard. The size makes it a perfect board to cruise around on.c

Song Piiq

The other day I recived an email from my friends over at Sony.

The informed me with some sneak preview information about a new line of Designer Head Phones - PiiQ. They asked me if I would pass on this sneak preview to you (my readers) and I said I would be happy to.

The first thing that I thought when I saw this new line was Creativity. Boasting unique designs and stylish colors, Piiq by Sony is planning on becoming the next big thing. Starting at $14.99 and going up to $99.99, Piiq has models to fit every budget.

Coming out this Month PiiQ should be at your your surf store or online very soon.

Wetsuits in Summer

The best part about surfing for most places in the summer is the fact that the water gets warm and you are no longer required to wear a wetsuit. Welcome to summer - home to warm water and surf trunks!!!! But for those of you get cold easily or surf where the water is still somewhat cold, it can be tough deciding what wetsuit to wear.

The worst thing that can happen is that you are to hot in your wetsuit.

For summer surfing I would suggest investing in a spring suit. Costing around $100 these wetsuits are very versatile. If you surf early mornings or when it is windy, spring suits will do the job. You can also use your spring suit until the end of fall before switching to your full suit.

Zip-fizz Review

Zip-fizz has taken over the competition by storm by becoming the first to offer a energy drink powder which can be mixed with water on the go. Their mix is full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Each mix capsule contains only 10 Calories and zero sugar. Zip-fizz claims that you will feel a "boost" in about 15min. And it will continue for between 4-6 hours.

The other day I received a box of Zip-fizz to review. Here is a list of when I used it:
  • June 1st, 10am - Writing Articles & answering emails for the site
  • June 2nd, 12:30pm - Quick Surf after Lunch
  • June 3rd, 4:30pm - 1 Mile Swim
  • June 4th, 7am - Breakfast

I wanted to make sure I tested it in many different environments to ensure I wrote an accurate and fair review. I personally did not "love" this product. The mix tasted good and it was pretty easy to drink.
But once I started exercising, my stomach didn't feel good.

Drinking Zip-fizz before my Mile Swim was a big mistake - it left an overly sweet taste/residue in my mouth for the whole swim. The first thing I did when I got out of the pool was drink a bottle of water.

The only time I saw a difference without feeling sick or having any other side effects was when writing articles for the site. It did give me an energy boost, but it wore off about 2 hours later.

Final Opinion:

Zip-fizz does exactly what it claims to do - Give you an energy boost. The question is, how much are you willing to sacrifice for that boost. I personally didn't like this product for a few reasons ; the taste is just okay, it didn't sit well in my stomach and it left a overly sweet aftertaste. If you are looking for a energy drink at work than this is great. But if you are looking for an energy drink for before or after a workout than this is not for you.

Buckled Surfboards

With surfboard prices rising more people are getting there boards repaired to prolong the life of their boards. They figure that spending $200-$300 on repairs can put off buying a new $700 board of the racks. I personally like the idea of repairing buckled boards for various reasons.

The biggest being that it keeps another board out of the land fill. And it will also save you some money. One reason I would not suggest getting a buckled board fixed is if you plan on selling the board. Many people are hesitant on buying a used buckled surfboard, so the re sale value will drop dramatically.

Your best bet is to talk to your local ding repair guy and ask what we thinks, because every buckled board is different.
