Many surfers surf harder rather than smarter. There are many small tricks that can help you surf longer, catch more waves and not be as tired or sore the next day.
The first trick is to paddle out in a Rip Current. You have a smaller chance of getting caught inside and you don't have to paddle as hard to get out.
Second, don't sit out so far. The farther you sit outside the harder to have to paddle to catch the wave. Sit on the inside and improve your "two paddle" wave catching technique where you catch a wave right as it is breaking and you only have to paddle twice.
Lastly, wave selection is huge. If you catch every wave you paddle for then you aren't going to waste energy trying to catch a wave and then having to paddle back into position.
