Air Drops are Fun

February 28, 2010 by The Surfboard Man · Comments Off

One thing that makes surfing unique from any other sport is the feeling when you take off late on a steep wave. This is referred to as an air drop. Air Drops can be one of the best feelings ever, but they can also lead to painful wipeouts. On a longboard, it takes an advanced and skilled surfer to be able to stick the landing of an air drop. While a shortboard can land it a lot easier. Next time you go surfing take off super late on a wave and feel the free fall sensation that is known as an Air Drop.

Color Your Fin Art Project – Leucadia Project

February 23, 2010 by The Surfboard Man · Comments Off

My friends over at The Leucadia Project.com have started a neat art project for there readers. The idea is simple, yet very creative. Simply print off their fin template and color/sketch/paint/draw away. Once you finish your design then send it back in and they will feature your “Custom Fin” on there website. I did and mine will be up soon. I have almost o% artistic drawing talent – I am more into photography. So I went for a basic retro design for a Classic Single Fin Longboard which you can see below.

Surf Smarter – Not Harder

February 21, 2010 by The Surfboard Man · Comments Off

Many surfers surf harder rather than smarter. There are many small tricks that can help you surf longer, catch more waves and not be as tired or sore the next day. The first trick is to paddle out in a Rip Current. You have a smaller chance of getting caught inside and you don’t have to paddle as hard to get out. Second, don’t sit out so far. The farther you sit outside the harder to have to paddle to catch the wave. Sit on the inside and improve your “two paddle” wave catching technique where you catch a wave right as it is breaking and you only have to paddle twice. Lastly, wave selection is huge. If you catch every wave you paddle for then you aren’t going to waste energy trying to catch a wave and then having to paddle back into position. Remember to surf Smarter not Harder.

Riding a 4’10 piece of StyroFoam – Ryan Burch

February 20, 2010 by The Surfboard Man · Comments Off

Filmed on one winter day, Ryan Burch lays into his 4’10″ block of styrofoam. He took a saw to a soft top surfboard blank and voila- no fins, no resin or fiberglass, no stringer, no leash… just a square chunk of foam. More shenanigans coming soon via the new surf film “stoked and broke” a surfari epic on zero dollars.

Surfer Haircut

February 14, 2010 by The Surfboard Man · Comments Off

The Surfer Haircut has become very popular over the past few years. But as surfers it is difficult to get a great hair cut for a great price. One thing I have found is that younger haircutters are better at contemporary styles. Another tip for getting a great hair cut is to dress in surfer clothing. A haircutter is going to give you a better surfer hair style if you are wearing surf trunks and a t-shirt than in a business suit.
