If it sucks still paddle out....

I have experienced countless times when i head down to go surfing and when I get there the surf is horrible. This situation usually happens when there is really nice weather, but no swell. I always paddle out for at 30 min. because it is often better than it looks and at least i will get a work out. Even on some of the worst days i get a few decent rides you just have to be patient. Surfing when the waves are bad will also help with your wave selection.

The Board doesn't make the surfer

A lot of less experienced surfers, will pay a lot of $$$$ for a top of the line surfboard. There is no problem with that as long as they realize that the surfboard does not make the surfer. Experianced surfers can ride any board - in any surf conditions - and get some really good rides.

Sure a newer, top of the line carbon fiber board will surf a lot better than a beater board.

But just remember that the board doesn't make the surfer. Try switching it up by riding a board that you don't ride very often. It will make you a lot better surfer if you can surf any board that you want.

The Drifter - Rob Machado

In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master Rob Machado flew to Indonesia to experience a different kind of surf trip. A journey that would take him way beyond his comfort zone, to the point where he could finally be alone with his thoughts, his desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef. What did he discover? You never stop dreaming. Even when they come true.

Hurley Pro - Recap

This week the ASP World Tour rolled into San Clemente to setup for the 6th stop on the tour. The surfers saw less than perfect lowers with small swells and long lulls. The conditions proved difficult to concur for many surfers, however some surfers excelled.

Slater had his usual crazy boards, which have started to become his trade mark. One board he rode featured carbon-fiber strips which acted like a stringer. Rob Machado took down Taj Burrow in round 2 by .16 points. That was one of the standout heats which came with a win from the under dog Rob Machado.

In round 3 Kelly Slater took down Huntington Beach local Brett Simpson who got into the contest because he won the Hurley US Open. Hurley decided to run a full day of heats on Saturday with the hope of catching the swell which rolled in today and finishing the contest.

But the winner of the Hurley Pro and $105,000 is Mick Fanning who took down Kelly Slater in the Semi's and Dane Reynolds in the Final.

What is the waiting period for a surf contest?

A waiting period for a surf contest is the time that they have to run the contest. For example the waiting period is 2 weeks, but the contest only takes a maximum of 4 days to run if they ran the contest as fast as they could.

The reason for the waiting period is so the contest can be run in the best surf possible. The theory is that hopefully within the 2 week period their will be some sort of swell. Some contests have larger or smaller waiting periods that 2 weeks. Cause the truth is no one wants to surf waves in a contest like the ones below.
